VoiceRef — Professional Reference Checking Platform
Last updated: March 4, 2026
VoiceRef is a professional reference checking platform for recruiters and hiring managers. When a recruiter needs to verify a job candidate's references, VoiceRef sends a single transactional SMS to the reference asking for consent before placing a phone call.
No marketing or promotional messages are ever sent. All SMS messages are transactional consent requests tied to a specific reference check initiated by an authenticated recruiter.
| Keyword | Action | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Y | Opt-in / Consent | Reference consents — call is initiated immediately |
| L | Schedule Later | Reference opens scheduling page to pick a time |
| N | Decline | Request declined — no call placed, no further messages |
| STOP | Opt-out (permanent) | Number added to permanent do-not-contact list |
| HELP | Help | VoiceRef info and support contact returned |
The following shows exactly how end users (professional references) consent to receive SMS messages and phone calls from VoiceRef, with screenshots from the live platform:
Recruiters must authenticate via Google or Microsoft OAuth before accessing the platform. No anonymous access is permitted. Every action is tied to an authenticated user account.

After login, the recruiter sees a list of candidates and their reference check status. All data is scoped to the recruiter's own account.

The recruiter opens a candidate profile and adds professional references by entering the reference's name, phone number, and professional relationship to the candidate.

The recruiter clicks "Start All" to initiate the consent flow. A confirmation dialog appears asking to confirm before any SMS is sent.

Audit Trail
At this moment, VoiceRef records the recruiter's authenticated user ID, IP address, and timestamp. These records are retained for 5 years for TCPA compliance and are available upon request.
The reference receives exactly one transactional SMS. The message includes the brand name, purpose, all response options, opt-out instructions, rates disclosure, and message frequency. Exact message text:

Method A: SMS Reply
Reference replies Y → call initiated immediately. Reply L → opens scheduling. Reply N → request declined permanently.
Method B: Web Consent Page
Reference taps the secure link → web consent page with three options: "Yes, Call Me Now" / "Schedule for Later" / "No Thanks". Link expires in 24 hours.

If the reference does not opt in, no call is ever placed.
After opt-in, VoiceRef places one phone call for a 3-5 minute structured reference interview. The call identifies itself at the start, discloses recording, and allows the reference to end the call at any time. A confirmation SMS is sent immediately after opt-in.
Each reference receives a maximum of up to 3 SMS messages per reference check request:
No marketing, promotional, or recurring messages are ever sent. Total messages never exceed 3 per reference check request.
References can opt out at any time by:
Opted-out numbers are permanently added to our do-not-contact list and will never receive future messages or calls from VoiceRef.
VoiceRef does not share, sell, or transfer opt-in consent or phone numbers to any third party for marketing or any other purpose. Mobile opt-in data and consent will never be shared with third parties or affiliates. Consent is collected solely for the purpose of conducting the specific reference check requested by the recruiter.
See our full Privacy Policy for details on how SMS consent data is handled and protected.
